In connection with the Art Cologne 2026 exhibition at Frank Fluegel Galerie, American artist Alex Katz has released a new edition of prints. The works, entitled “Autumn", are now available at FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel. “Autumn” was the artist’s tenth solo exhibition at the Gray Gallery and his first exhibition of large-scale landscapes since 2018. The exhibition followed his highly acclaimed retrospective “Gathering,” which opened in the fall of 2022 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. One might be surprised by the unbound ethereality of the landscape paintings, which in recent years have consumed much of artist Alex Katz’s still considerable energy. But these works are in fact the culmination of a lifelong artistic project that strives to compress everything into “a single burst of energy … to paint it wide open.” Throughout his career, Alex Katz has painted figures and landscapes in equal measure. Autumn was created on a large scale and in vivid colors. “I began to view the landscapes as an environment that surrounds you,” says Katz. “There is no narrative. It’s about perception.” Across eleven monumental canvases, Katz depicted the glowing foliage, vast fields, and wind-swept trees as the seasons change. Katz’s autumn series, created between 2022 and 2023, features a vibrant autumn palette, while other paintings in the exhibition—drawn from the related series Field’s End and Tree Top—present more subdued responses to the landscape in muted shades of green, yellow, and gray. ART COLOGNE is the world's oldest active art fair for modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1967, it significantly shaped the international art market and remains the most important gathering for galleries, collectors, and institutions in Germany. Every November, the event transforms the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds into a global hub for 20th and 21st-century visual arts. The fair's success story began amid the social shifts of the late 1960s. Cologne-based gallerists Hein Stünke and Rudolf Zwirner launched the event in 1967 under the name "Kunstmarkt Köln '67." Their goal was to revitalize the stagnant West German art trade and make contemporary art accessible to a broader audience. With this concept, Cologne revolutionized the art world: the idea of displaying artworks side-by-side in booths with transparent pricing democratized the market. It created the blueprint for all modern art fairs worldwide, from Art Basel to Frieze. ART COLOGNE stands out for its balanced mix of historical depth and progressive movements. Exhibitors are divided into three core areas: • Modern Art / Post-War: Renowned dealers present masterpieces of Classical Modernism and established postwar art positions, such as German Informel or the ZERO movement. • Contemporary Art: This sector is dedicated to established international contemporary art, represented by leading global galleries. • Neumarkt & NEw POSITIONS: A special focus is traditionally placed on supporting the next generation. This program allows emerging talents and young galleries to present their work to a major collecting audience. Economic and Cultural Relevance For the Rhineland region—which boasts an exceptionally high density of private collections and museums—the fair is a vital economic driver and cultural anchor. Beyond the commercial trade, the prestigious ART COLOGNE Prize is awarded annually for outstanding achievements in art mediation. The event is accompanied by a dense program of high-profile panel discussions (Talks) and curated special exhibitions in cooperation with institutions like ZADIK (Central Archive for German and International Art Market Research). The rapidly growing street art segment is perfectly complemented at FRANK FLUEGEL GALLERY by successful artists such as Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta), XOOOOX, Punk Me Tender, Fringe the Artist, Max Mavior, and John Crash Matos. So the gallery has the most sought after Mr. Brainwash unique mixed media artwork Balloon Girl 🎈 and Beautiful Girl as well es Everyday Life, the monkey with the Coca-Cola Box. Of course, the owner-managed gallery also offers design objects, pictures, and vintage furniture by Maurizio Cattelan, Paul Smith, Richard Orlinski, and Pierre Jeanerette for sale. Exhibitions and shows take place regularly in the centrally located gallery spaces in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel. FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE - The Art of Reinventing Value.
